:mrgreen: books and articles

I have been writing about managing technology for over 25 years, with my output split between privately commissioned manuals/ reports/ training material and publicly available guides, articles and books. Here is a very brief selection from my writing portfolio:

:mrgreen: Managing IT in the SME: a Guide for Finance Directors

Taking over the IT function can be a daunting prospect, even for people with a technical background so a systematic approach is essential.

I was commissioned by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW) to write a step-by-step guide for Finance Directors taking responsibility for managing IT in the Small and Medium sized business.

For the purpose of the guide it is assumed that the day-to-day working of the IT function is in the hands of an IT manager.

Readers are assumed to have a reasonable knowledge of IT ‘basics’ but need a better understanding of:

  • The steps involved in taking over the reins of the IT function;
  • Delivering and developing successful IT services;
  • IT project planning and delivery;
  • Essential concepts and principles of effective IT resource management;
  • The IT facets of business integrity (compliance, risk, security, disaster recovery and business continuity).

:mrgreen: Aligning IT with Business Strategy: a Best Practice Guide for Decision Makers in IT

Organisations across all sectors recognise the importance of aligning IT with business strategy although the reality is that few actually seem to achieve this goal. The consequences are more often that not spiralling technology and IT infrastructure costs coupled with poor returns on investment ultimately resulting in reduced business performance.

This Best Practice Guide, commissioned by the National Computing Centre, provides an in-depth assessment of the fundamental components of effective IT Strategy planning which can be used to provide a framework that enables a better understanding of your organisations technology requirements and/or the insight to offer business and technology improvements.
