Child Support System burns billions but Government still eager to spend

Today’s edition of Computing reports the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) ambitious plans for yet another Child Maintenance Payment system. Apparently the last attempt cost the taxpayer about £450 million and resulted in the Child Support Agency (CSA) failing to collect approximately £.3.5 billion in outstanding maintenance payments. That’s almost £4 billion of wasted money by my reckoning.

Implementation problems to cost hospital £4M?

Computer Weekly reports that a major London hospital, Barts, could pay a very high price for problems associated with the implementation of new systems, part of the NHS programme for IT.

Money to burn? Taxman chucks another $5.5 billion on the bonfire

The Sunday Times reports today (27th July) that HMRC is to write off £2.8 billion as a consequence of problems with a computer system. So that’s another 5.5 billion dollars thrown on the Trillion Dollar Bonfire, without so much as a blink of an eye.

Annual cost of project failure in EU: 142 billion euro

The annual cost of project failure in the European Union in has been estimated at €142 billion according to research by Dr John McManus and Dr Trevor Wood-Harper.

The research defines project failure as not meeting any or all of the following success criteria: cost, time, quality and original requirements.

Another billion dollars of “wasted” IT?

From Computer Weekly: “The government has wasted at least half a billion pounds on overrun IT projects, according to figures collected by Liberal Democrat shadow chancellor Vince Cable.”

Congratulations to Vince Cable for highlighting more symptoms of the Trillion Dollar Bonfire. What we really need though is for Government to change their behaviour.
