We have been stuck in a redundant IT paradigm for quite a while now and we are long overdue for a shift forward. I have been writing about this for a couple of years now and the message is starting to get traction.

Martin Schofield and Colin Beveridge discuss the future of IT

Martin Schofield (Retail Operations Director, Harvey Nichols) and I talked about the future of IT recently, as part of a discussion arranged by Computing magazine.

Our conversation, part of Computing’s Tomorrow’s IT Leaders campaign was filmed as a two part video.

At the end of part one, Martin observes that “IT will die, eventually” – my own perspective is that IT will first have to accept its proper place as only one part of a broader information systems approach.

What should die, as soon as possible, is the present obsession with IT as the end – instead of part of the means.

Enterprises are falling over themselves to become “2.0.” At least one company (Compuware 2.o) has changed its business name to incorporate the magic numbers. Mashups, wikis, p2p networks, blogs and tagging are proliferating exponentially. But none of these is the real killer app for Web 2.0.
The Killer App for 2.0 is not a software component at all. The 2.0 Killer App is: the right mindset.

The 2.0 mindset means being prepared to do things quite differently from the 20th Century [legacy] IT based systems. But It’s not just a question of choosing the right set of tools – it’s all about:

good enough systems

rebuild and throw-away (regularly)

understanding systems theory principles (emergence, self-organisation etc. etc)

moving beyond a data-based paradigm to information and knowledge

The 2.0 mindset is within the grasp of any organisation or individual prepared to think differently. Sadly, some of the principles required for the future are alien/ counter-intuitive to many at the moment. So, it’s up to those of us who do “get it” to evangelise and share the message.

Doing nothing is not an option, stagnation is only one stage away from extinction.
