Do businesses really regard their CIO as the Cheap Infrastructure Officer?
Well that was the thrust of an extremely interesting observation made by Ilhan Aksoycan, who commented on one of my earlier articles about the future role of the CIO.
I am sure that many will dispute the attribution of cheap infrastructure as the primary function of a CIO.
And yet many CIOs accept that they are frequently challenged “to do more with less” – which kind of implies that cheapness is an expected performance indicator.
For sure, there is quite a fine balance to be struck between effective management of resources and relentlessly pursuing cost reductions.
But the real game for CIOs is always value delivery – not being bottom of the cost league. Teams that finish bottom of any league usually get relegated.
