An effective recruitment process for interim managers is very different - or should be.
And there is a ‘killer’ job interview question that can quickly sort the interim wheat from the chaff.
Economic downturns always promote the importance of interim management, as more organizations and individuals look to the interim market for quick fixes.
This usually means that there is a measurable uptick in the number of interim management opportunities available but this is more than offset by a huge increase in the number of candidates offering themselves for interim work, many for the first time.
In such circumstances it can be hard for the client [employer] to ensure that they are employing the valuable services of a committed interim, rather than a suddenly displaced staffer looking for their next safe billet.
Effective interim management is about the task – not about opportunities for ‘going native.’
The very real risk to the employer is that they might find themselves taking on an interim manager who is more committed to their own employment needs, instead of those of the interim job itself.
So the absolute ‘killer’ interview question for a client to test this risk is to ask the candidate: “describe your exit strategy if successful in gaining this role…“
From the employer’s perspective, the nature of the response – and the manner of the responder – can act as a tremendously powerful aid to de-risking the interim recruitment process.
As an interim candidate, how would you answer this ‘killer’ question at a job interview?
