Leading from behind

Here is some advice for budding Thought Leaders: you will probably get more response to your pearls of wisdom if you are two steps behind your audience, rather than two steps ahead of them.

This may seem counter-intuitive but it’s true, all too often, because the majority of people are naturally biased towards immediate re-inforcement of their existing beliefs.

So your messages have more chance of getting a good reception if they are close enough to your audience’s comfort zone.

Painful as it may be to the Thinker, focus and careful targeting can be far more important than quality of thought to the effectiveness of communications.

Thought Leadership is not a precision weapon, it is more like firing a shotgun: too far ahead, or too far behind and you will miss your target completely.
