Media radar spots Bonfire

The Times has finally woken up to massively wasted Government IT investment. Better late than never. The issue has been around for many years but still remained below the mainstream media radar, even when told about it. I don’t agree that over-optimism is the fundamental cause. The absolute root of the problem is a failure to design [from the outset] effective systems. Everything else flows from that single mistake, feeding more and more of our money to the Trillion Dollar Bonfire.

    Hi Colin,

Agreed. Of course, there are very many with vested interests who have not wished exposure of the volume of waste, both in the public and private sectors. And while the good times rolled, waste was hidden. But now we are facing the Hard Times Of Olde England once again, none of us can afford to waste resources.

The observed fact that the ‘mainstream media’ have shown such little interest opens them up to a charge of complicity.

Just as all those Non-Executive Directors (and major shareholders) who fail to insist that decisions are based on facts and evidence rather than opinion, have been culpable in the bonfire.

Both business and public administration need to rightshift their performance, to focus on effectively delivering the desired outcomes. And nowhere is this more critical than in the use of information technology and software-intensive systems. 75-80% of organisations score one or less on a 5-point scale of effectiveness. So the Directors (and other stakeholders) of four out of five firms need to get a sense of urgency (fer Chrissakes!) and start their rightshifting journey.
