Some say that small businesses will lead the way out of the global economic downturn, presumably because hard times create  necessity – the mother of invention.

I am not so sure, although I would be pleased to be proven wrong.

I suspect that the credit crunch will give us a handful of golden acorns – but not a forestful.

Can you describe what you do in just three words? Is it possible, or fair, to summarise ourselves so sharply?

These questions sprang to mind when I recalled the various job interviews I have observed, where candidates have been asked to suggest three words that their colleagues would use to describe them.

Premature evaluation

Many organizations suffer from undiagnosed premature evaluation. Decisions are made without adequate information, leading to unexpected costs and disappointment.

We could mitigate the risk of premature evaluation by adding a new sign-off requirement to the business case for all new initiatives: a qualifying level of confidence in the quality of information supporting the proposal.
