Playing the game well

I had such great feedback to the Strategist Beware piece the other week and your responses made me think a little bit more about the chess metaphor.

Chess is a game with clearly defined rules and roles for the pieces and their movement. The Chess player needs to understand these and also needs good strategic and tactical awareness.

However, what do we know about the values of the individual Chess player? Will they play the  game for mutual enjoyment, or do their values simply confine them to a ruthless pursuit of success with absolute disregard to their opponent?

I believe that this is another Chess related issue that relates directly to our personal and business lives. How we play the game is as important as the outcome.

I agree. I’ve enjoyed a successful outcome to a small project every bit as much as with a large project. The fun is in overcoming the challenges along the way.

And, some of my best games of chess have been against opponents just a little bit better at the game than me. It’s good to stretch ourselves!
