re-invention is key to relevance

Being irrelevant is not an effective strategy. But sustaining our relevance in a changing world requires that we also change regularly, by adapting to new circumstances and situations.

A quietly competent process of evolution is generally more manageable than a noisy revolution.

Done properly, this means that we can steadily re-invent ourselves, over time, without anyone noticing any particular effort on our part.

More often, though, we do not realise quickly enough that we have lost relevance. We fall behind and pay the price of irrelevance, individually or collectively.

Then we are faced with a difficult challenge: recovering our position under duress. Catching up with our potential is usually costly and painful.

We can mitigate the cost of relevance by accepting that re-invention is not a discretionary option.
