Three burning CEO questions for a CIO

Here are a few of my suggestions for questions that a CEO needs to ask the CIO:

  • What do we really need for the future?
  • How do we change things to make our visions reality?
  • How do we make sure that our information systems remain relevant to our evolving business and add persistent value to a successful organisation?

Well what do you think they should be?

Where else can I use IT to take cost out of the business?

When did you last do a disaster scenario test?

Can you see any new opportunities to use IT to hold up revenues and profit?

    Mine would be:

    1. What does our IT give the business that our competitors don’t have
    2. Which IT team members do we need to invest in and retain at all costs
    3. Which aspects of IT deliver the least value to the business?

The 3 most important top level questions are:

    * How will the IT Group contribute to increased revenue during the next 12 months?

    * How will the IT Group reduce costs and increase our organisation’s profit margin during the next 12 months?

    * How do our existing and planned IT systems minimise our organisation’s business risk?

    Or perhaps…

    * How do our existing and planned IT systems optimise our organisation’s business opportunities and risk?

All the above assumes the business has a clear and well communicated vision, True North direction, and strategic business goals to which the IT Group (and others) can align. If not, the one overriding question is…

    * How can the IT Group help business management determine our current state, where the H**l we’re going, and how on Earth shall we achieve our desired outcome?
