Authority likes certainty because it reinforces positions. And of course, by natural corollary, Uncertainty unsettles Authority because established positions are challenged, or defeated.
Which is why our business systems are usually predicated on the concept of absolute certainty – clear-cut and ‘logical.’
But the world is naturally full of uncertainty and it would be a dull life if it wasn’t.
Nevertheless we still build our social, commercial and political edifices on the foundations of certainty; despite regular evidence of the intrinsic risks that bedevil us all when such systems fail, or falter.
Perhaps we will eventually realise that we need systems capable of resilience in the event of uncertainty, ambiguity and variety.
